The Business Line
Introduction
Sam’s Story
Since 1995, The Business Line has been providing office furnishings to clients and supplies to promote a healthy work environment. The COVID-19 pandemic and work from home mandates had greatly reduced the demand for office furniture.
Sam reached out to me as he wanted to update his website and pivot his targeting towards selling home office furniture to remote workers. Many remote workers have also received benefits allowing them to purchase home office furniture and were the ideal target for The Business Line’s ergonomic chairs and tables.

Visual Identity
The updated branding included modern design elements with the goal of creating a warm, reliable, and dependable visual brand. The colour scheme mixed warm earth tones that are balanced by the darker greys. It is reflective of the natural wood materials and the metal finishings that make up the furniture.
The photography was provided by the company Artopex, the home office furniture supplier, and displays the home office furniture in multiple settings and has a clean, crisp, and minimal feel.
Prototyping
Following the lo-fi wireframes, the emphasis on this iteration was making it easy for first-time users, particularly those that will be admins, to create and manage groups. I aimed to make the process as intuitive and familiar as possible by using standard user interface elements (input controls, navigational components, and informational components). These elements were then customized by the standards set out in the style guide.
With multiple products in different finishes and colours, I aimed to ensure that:
Each variation was shown through an intuitive interface with details of their specifications
Complementary products were presented to encourage additional purchase
Background information about the company and its manufacturers were provided to create greater trust in the quality of the furniture
As an online only retailer customers would not be able to physically see the furniture until it was delivered. To avoid returns, I presented as much visual and descriptive information about the furniture to equip customers with the information they needed to be confident in their purchases.
Learnings
Market Strategy
During initial conversations with Sam, the primary focus was on revamping the site with the expectations of offices re-opening. However, I encouraged Sam to refocus on prioritizing home office furniture as it presented an untapped immediate market that fits the need of his current product offerings.
B2B Sales
The Business Line targets both Business to Consumer (B2C) and Business to Business (B2B). For the B2B sales, Sam works with a sourcing supplier at each of his client’s companies, who would help facilitate the purchase of office furniture on behalf of employees. It was interesting learning how to design the site to meet the needs of both these customers.
